How to Make a Cat Bed With Ohhio Braid

Hey there! If you were following us on social media this November and December, you already know all about Ohhio Braid and all the cool things you can make with it — like a chunky cat bed! Summer is approaching fast, and Braid’s official launch in our shop is not that far off, so we thought we’d make a .gif-ed tutorial on how to hand-crochet a gorgeous chunky cat bed with Ohhio Braid. This tutorial is adapted from our YouTube video on the same topic, and if you’re itching for more tutorials, you can subscribe to our channel and be the first to know when we make a new one.

Don’t be discouraged if you didn’t get it exactly right on your first try — it takes practice to handmake itmes the same way we do. Even if you miss the mark, we’re sure your kitty will love their basket just the same. Now, without further ado, here’s how to make a chunky cat bed using Ohhio Braid.

Part One: Make a Chain

You’re going to start by making a chain with four stitches and connecting it in the middle. This is going to be the center of your cat bed. Notice the almost-circular shape? The rest of the cat bed is going to be built around this piece. For the rest of this tutorial, we’re going to be crocheting Braid into this piece counter-clockwise.

Part Two: Build the Base

In this step, you’re going to be building on top of what you’ve made in the previous steps. Locate the next stitch to the left of your arm and pull Braid trough it to make a new loop. Pull it through the one you have on your arm.

Next, locate the next two stitches and pull your Braid through the space between them. Repeat twenty-three times.

Part Three: Build the Sides

This is the fun part! Locate the next stitch to the left, and pull your Braid through it to make a new loop. Pull it through the one you have on your arm, and continue until you make three full rows.

Once you’ve finished, tie off the last loop into a knot, cut off the remaining Braid, and hide its ends inside the other stitches.

Now invert your creation, and voilà! Your pet’s new home is here.
